The mission of the Scientific Working Group for Shoeprint and Tire Tread Evidence (SWGTREAD) was to provide a professional forum where forensic footwear and tire impression evidence examiners can share knowledge, evaluate practices, develop standards, identify research needs and disseminate information.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initiated the formation of SWGTREAD to standardize and advance the forensic analysis of footwear and tire impression evidence. The first meeting took place in September 2004 in Quantico, VA. From 2004 to 2014, SWGTREAD was co-funded by the FBI and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
In October 2014, the Footwear and Tire Subcommittee of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) was created. At that point, SWGTREAD decided to discontinue its operations and focus its efforts on supporting the subcommittee. SWGTREAD's published standards were re-published on the OSAC subcommittee's website. It is the goal of the subcommittee to transition many of the remaining SWGTREAD work products to the OSAC website; however, it is unclear at this time when and how that transition will take place. SWGTREAD.org and the SWGTREAD Forum will remain available until a suitable online replacement is identified.
